Breast Lift
The goal of a breast lift or “mastopexy” is to correct sagging or drooping breasts by removing and tightening excess skin in the area so that the breast projects naturally forward and sits higher on the chest. This procedure should not be confused with breast augmentation, which is intended to increase the size of the breasts. Depending upon your aesthetic goals, you may elect to have both of these procedures performed together. However, many find that the improved contour achieved with a breast lift renders additional volume from implants unnecessary.
The Procedure
During the procedure, incisions are made around the skin-color line of the areola. They can extend vertically, down to the crease of the breast and/or horizontally along the breast crease. The extra skin is trimmed away, and the underlying tissue is lifted and reshaped to improve breast contour and firmness. The nipples and areolas can be repositioned to a more youthful height. The skin surrounding the areola is then brought down and together to reshape the breast. Implants may be used for extra support and placed in a pocket directly under the breast tissue or deeper—under the muscle of the chest wall. Most patients can resume normal activities within a couple of weeks but should avoid exercise for 6-8 weeks. Scars come with the process but with extra care, they will heal and fade.
