Peels

Chemical peels are used to treat wrinkles, discolored skin and scars — usually on the face. They can be done alone or combined with other cosmetic procedures. They can also be performed at different depths: light, medium or deep. A chemical solution is applied to the skin to remove the top layers. The skin that grows back is smoother. With a light or medium peel, you may need to undergo the procedure more than once to get the desired results. Deeper peels offer more dramatic results but will also require longer recovery time.

The Procedure

During a chemical peel, a solution is applied to your skin. You may feel warm to somewhat hot for a few minutes. This is followed by a stinging sensation. To relieve the sting, a cool compress may be applied to your skin. The chemical is then washed off and/or neutralized.

Your recovery will vary depending on the depth of your peel.

For light peels, you should expect to experience a sunburn-like reaction with redness followed by scaling that can last from 3-7 days. You should apply lotion or cream during that time and daily sunscreen after your skin heals. You should be able to wear makeup as soon as the next day after treatment. Additional peels can be repeated every 2-5 weeks until you achieve your desired results.

For medium peels, you will experience some redness, swelling, stinging and flaking of your skin. The swelling can last and/or worsen over the initial 48 hours and blisters can develop. Your skin will crust and peel off over 7-14 days. You will need to perform daily soaks and apply ointment afterward as well as take antiviral medication for 10-14 days. You should be able to wear makeup 5-7 days after the procedure and additional medium-depth peels can be repeated every 6-12 months to maintain the results.

If you’ve had a deep chemical peel, your treatment area will be bandaged for a few days after the procedure. Your total healing time should range from 14-21 days, during which you will need to perform daily soaks and apply ointment afterward as well as take antiviral medication for 10-14 days. You will need to wait at least 14 days before applying makeup. You can only have one deep peel performed on your face.

You should avoid direct sunlight during the recovery period, regardless of the depth of your peel. After your recovery, a daily moisturizer and sunscreen are recommended.
